A group of 11 Williamston High School students received a $10,000 grant funded by the Lemelson Foundation and administered by MIT to invent a solar powered rip current alert system for the Great Lakes.
The Invention
Developing an Offshore Rip Current Alert (ORCA) System for the Great Lakes Invention Statement

We will develop a self-sustaining alert system that detects rip currents in the Great Lakes and warns people of the danger. Present warning systems are merely predictions based only on general water and weather conditions, while our device detects the actual presence of rip currents in specific locations. Due to its potential to save lives, both public and private beaches are interested in employing our invention. This patentable device, contained in a buoy, will be powered by solar energy, be easily transportable, and cost effective.
